Hanxu Liu

ESR Project Title: Collective Voice in the Global Arena: Interactions with the United Nations

Hanxu Liu is a PhD researcher at the Department of International and European Law at the Faculty of Law, Maastricht University. She holds an LL.M in International and European Human Rights Law from the University of Leeds.

Hanxu has previous experience in working with disability advocacy and research, and NGOs in China and East Asia. Hanxu worked as a project coordinator at Wuhan University Public Interest and Development Law Institute and later as a researcher part-time at Wuhan East-Lake Institute for Social Advancement until 2019. Her work supported the management of international interdisciplinary research and teaching projects of disability studies and laws in China, and research projects related to UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) mechanism and its implementation in the context of East Asia. She also contributed to the academic journal Disability Rights Studies in China as a coordinator and an editor.

Hanxu’s PhD research is funded by the DARE project. Her research project is titled, ‘Collective Voice in the Global Arena: Interactions with the United Nations’, which aims to examine whether European DPOs have effectively conducted disability rights advocacy with the UN human rights system, with a particular focus on their interactions with the UN CRPD Committee and with the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It will investigate the processes, outcomes/results of such interactions at the national and international levels, and explore the implications for future actions.
